Organizing Your Classroom

As a future educator, I understand that good classroom management will be the key to my success as a teacher. A classroom will consists of student desks, bookcases, filing cabinets, chairs, and a few tables. It may also contain technology such as a SMART board, a television, or a computer. With all of these objects in one room, it can get very crowded and chaotic. In order to save space it is important to arrange your classroom in an organized and efficient way. A few tips to keep in mind when organizing your are: 1) Keep areas that are common areas for student gatherings free of congestion, 2) Make sure students desks can be easily seen by the teacher, 3) Keep materials that are frequently used and supplies in an accessible place, and 4) Make sure your students can easily see instructional presentations and displays.

If you keep these tips in mind when organizing your classroom you will be able to produce a good room arrangement. It is necessary to be sure to arrange the furniture and equipment in your classroom in a way that students can be seen at all times. This will enable you to observe students when you are in all areas of your classroom. An important thing to consider when organizing your classroom is whether the arrangement you have provided for your students is a safe environment that aids in student motivation and learning. In the posts on the next page I discuss desks arrangements, wall and ceiling space, storage space, small group areas, and arrangement of technology equipment.
